Becoming a Renaissance Person Online

A lot of people have taken up the ridiculous notion that when a person goes online, the only thing that they could be doing is watching silly videos of playing video games.  And while these are definitely fun online pursuits, they do not in themselves even scratch the surface of what is possible through the online medium.  You can actually become something of a renaissance individual through the knowledge that you can acquire online.  Keep in mind that sometimes even one of those silly videos can actually teach you a thing or two about a skill that you have been meaning to learn (or brush up on).  And while you will not necessarily be inventing the next great method of transportation or painting brilliant murals, you might find that you can learn a foreign language, pick up training in website design and become certified in a few different disciplines.

If you have ever gone to YouTube and typed in “parallel parking,” you will actually find a very good tutorial which will show you exactly how to put your car into the spot without incident.  While you should not try to entirely teach yourself how to drive (that is what the limitations of the learner’s permit are designed for), you can also learn how to do slightly less dangerous things like breaking bricks and escaping from holds.

You can even learn languages and pick up certifications online.  While there is never going to be a suitable substitute for experience, you can pick up all sorts of different programs to teach you the fundamentals.  In cases such as language usage, you can use a program like Skype to talk to all of your foreign friends and colleagues, and practice your skills at your new language.  When it comes to skills that do not involve having to go through clinicals (such as the practical parts of nursing), you can learn just about anything you want on the Internet.
